Declare

Psalms 91:2 NLT This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.

Ask almost any Christ follower about confession, and they will immediately talk about the confession of sins. But the word confess simply means to agree with, to proclaim, and to declare. We certainly are to agree with God that we are sinful and in need of a Savior, to receive forgiveness and be cleansed from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). But confession was never meant to stop there. Much of the weakness in our faith and struggles in our walk with God is because we fail to exercise the power of declaring God’s word and promises over our lives.

We are instructed to confess God’s faithfulness, goodness, kindness, his promises, and all that he has done. One of the major acts of spiritual authority is to declare your agreement with God in all these areas. That His plans for you are good, that he is our father, our healer, our provider, our redeemer, our advocate, our refuge, our strength, our joy, our very present help in times of trouble, and so much more.

Jesus began his ministry by publicly declaring what the prophet Isaiah had spoken of him hundreds of years before. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim release for the captives and freedom for prisoners. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come” (Isaiah 61:1-2). This public declaration laid the foundation for everything that Jesus did over the next 3.5 years. It wasn’t enough for it to come from Isaiah; Jesus needed to speak it into existence just as He and the Father did at creation. Later, Jesus would declare to the disciples that real faith was more than believing: “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.” (Mark 11:23). See it? Whoever speaks to the mountain.

When a young David took on the giant Goliath, it was not enough for him to believe he would be victorious. He boldly moved into battle, declaring, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel…. this assembly will know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17). He declared victory even before it happened.

What words are you choosing to declare to create the foundation for your life? Words filled with doubt and fear, or God’s words of faith and life. It’s entirely up to you—you and you alone decide what comes out of your mouth. The natural and easy thing to do is to speak negative things and circumstances that surround you. We do not deny the facts or circumstances we face; we just choose to believe what God’s Word says and declare it instead. It is living by faith, not by sight. God’s Word, His Truth, stands forever but facts and circumstances change every day.

There is untapped power in confession and agreeing with what God has spoken and promised us in His Word. Declaring involves speaking forth God’s truth and declaring His promises with confidence and authority. When we proclaim and declare, we tap into the transformative power of God’s Word and invite His work into our lives. Today, declare God’s Word over your life and see the results!
