2 Samuel 22:32 NIV For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?
Insurance companies have used it as their logo; actors, movies, and athletes have all tried to claim it as their name. But mentioned more than 100 times in scripture, there is no Rock except our God.
The word Rock represents God’s permanence, protection, and enduring faithfulness. When we fully grasp God as our Rock, the promises that He will be our stability, strength, refuge, safety, deliverer, and salvation come alive. He promises that when we know Him as our Rock, we will be fruitful, victorious, and live in His peace. And at the same time, God is also tenderness, mercy, grace, and compassion. In every season of life, in every circumstance, we can find refuge, safety, peace, and rest because he is our Rock.
David knew God as The Rock and in Psalm 18:2 proclaimed, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock (Jehovah-Tsuri), in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Jehovah-Tsuri: The God my Rock. He is the rock that struck and defeated Goliath (1 Samuel 17:49), the rock that brought forth life-sustaining water to quench the thirst of the Israelites (Exodus 17:1–7), the rock Moses was instructed to stand upon while God’s glory and goodness passed by (Exodus 33:21), and the source and strength of my salvation (Psalm 18:2). My salvation is not dependent on shifting or changing circumstances, but it is completely dependent on an immovable, unchanging God, my Rock (Psalms 62:1-2).
When the body of Jesus was taken down from the cross, as His spirit was capturing victory over sin and death, Jesus took refuge in Jehovah Tsuri. “His body was taken down from the cross, wrapped in linen cloth, and laid in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock" (Mark 15:46). God is the place of refuge no matter who we are or the battles we face.
David said that even in the midst of trouble, God is our rock to stand upon. Psalm 40:2 NIV, “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on the rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” The good news is we don’t have to claw and climb our way out of the pit and somehow get onto the rock. He promises to lift us up and place us there. All we must do is wait patiently and cry out to Him (Psalm 40:1). Waiting patiently is to completely surrender, no longer demanding it be done our way but totally trusting and resting in Him.
Matthew 7:24-27 NIV states, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the wind blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” We have a choice of building our life on the sand or the rock. The sand represents a life that ignores the wisdom of God, follows after their own foolish desires, and suffers failure when the storms come. But living a life built on the Rock (Him and his Word) brings strength and safety in the storms of life.
Yahweh Tsuri, you are my rock, immovable, unbreakable, and my firm foundation when everything around me seem to be unstable. You are my true source of strength, support, and defense. When storms come, you are my firm foundation. Thank you for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. Help me to keep my feet firmly planted on you as my Rock.
